A post about identifying some riders/bikes in old photos led to an interesting and unexpected post of results from 1977.

I thought when reading that I might have ridden the Snow Run in 77' on my 77' Penton 400. I was wrong, more on that later.

In those days when the weather was sub-freezing, we used studded tires, important for riding on the ice that was prevalent and crossing slippery logs and such. Today you can purchase studded tires (expensive) but in the old days, we used car studs and installed them ourselves using a dremel tool. They were great for riding on frozen lakes, something I would like to try again someday.

But I did mention in the facebook post I rode the 400, and then to my surprise, someone posted the results from an old Trail Rider magazine, I presume. I had thought that was the event I had ifinished first (!) in the "C heavy" class on my Penton, and I remembered that if I had gone one more check, I would have been High Point C, LOL. But I was mistaken, and thinking back it may have been the Salmon River Enduro where that took place. That enduro was also run in late fall, I think, and also was cold and wet with some deep stream crossings that were brutal in the cold. I didn't "hour out" but quit after beating myself up, stopped in a town to have some hot soup with some other riders before heading back to the start on the Penton

Below are the results and my finishing position in the 1977 Snow Run Enduro. I was just beginning to compete at the time and rode the Snow Run because it didn't conflict with the ECEA events. As to the enduro itself, it was cold, there was plenty of snow, and there was basically ONE LINE through the woods which made passing nearly impossible as the snow was so deep if you chose to try and pass the rider in front, you would probably lose time or worse. It was a crazy event that everyone should try once. I must have been riding my Suzuki PE 175cc in this event? It's as likely I was still riding the 76' Hercules 175cc ;-) I forget since it was so long ago and no photos. Of course I post entered so it was a late starting number and perhaps the usual disadvantage, but it was better than sitting at home, in February!
